Meet the veterinarians
About Dr. Billy Cole
I grew up in a peacefully suburban area of Long Island, New York, fascinated by animals, glued to nature shows, and reading as many books about animals as I could get my hands on. I told my mom at a young age that I wanted to be a doctor for animals when I grew up and was thrilled to get my first dog, Charlie—a smart but naughty Bichon Frise—when I was 14 years old.
Pursuing my passion, I received my bachelor’s degree in animal science from Cornell University in New York and completed veterinary school at Kansas State University. After graduation, I completed two internships in Connecticut and Los Angeles before moving to Ohio to complete a residency in small animal internal medicine at The Ohio State University.
I have worked in a variety of areas in the veterinary field, and I particularly enjoy working in internal medicine. While it’s difficult for a family to hear that their pet has a chronic condition that cannot be cured, I appreciate the opportunity to explain their pet’s condition clearly and help them understand their treatment or palliative care options.
My childhood dog, Charlie, was a part of more than half of my life, and returning to my parent’s home after he passed and not having him there to greet me was tough. Making the decision to say goodbye to a pet is heartbreaking, but preventing or ending a pet’s suffering is one of the kindest gifts we can give.
I’m honored to be a part of a pet’s end-of-life process and am touched by the love and compassion that families have for their pets. While I can’t make the pain of losing a pet disappear, I can ensure a pet experiences a peaceful and dignified passing at home, with the people they love.
In my free time, I enjoy gardening—particularly cacti and succulents—crocheting, and traveling. I also enjoy volunteering for causes that are important to me, including charities that support the LGBTQ community, mental health awareness, and suicide prevention.
